The Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in creative writing program at Wichita State University is the twelfth oldest in the nation and is known for producing well-trained writers and well-prepared teachers of writing and literature. As an MFA creative writing student, you’ll receive financial support through graduate teaching assistantships and fellowships which cover your tuition and provide a stipend.

Curriculum

First, you’ll develop a plan of study based on your interests and career plans. Then you’ll take core courses, which may include studies in fiction, poetry and drama, among others. To complete the MFA, you’ll also take a comprehensive exam and complete a final writing project of publishable quality.

Final Writing Project

The MFA final writing project in creative writing consists of a body of original work of publishable quality. The manuscript must be of such length as is appropriate to published books in its genre and is to be written under the direction of a member of the program staff. Candidates may preface their final writing project with a short introduction if they choose to do so.

Final Writing Project Review

Once the candidate has submitted the final writing project, a committee composed of the project director and a second reader will examine the work and determine whether or not the project meets the standards of acceptance.

Applied Learning

Students in the MFA in creative writing program are required to complete an applied learning or research experience to graduate from the program. The requirement can be met by the final project, in which students gather and produce a collection of poetry or fiction.

A degree in creative writing from Wichita State will equip you with skills that lead to diverse career options. Writers are employed throughout the public and private sectors from advertising agencies and the film industry to non-profits and academia.

Applicants for full-standing degree admission to the specialist and master’s programs typically must have: Earned a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution or a recognized institution in another country whose requirements for the bachelor’s degree are substantially equivalent to a U.S. bachelor’s degree. The minimum acceptable scores for most programs are: TOEFL - 79 on the Internet-based test, or 550 on the paper-based test. IELTS - minimum overall band score of 6.5 is required. PTE Academic - 58.
