Mechanical engineering applies the principles of physics and materials science for analysis, design, manufacturing, and maintenance of mechanical systems. Mechanical engineers use fundamental engineering concepts and contemporary design practices to design and develop new devices, materials, processes and systems, including smart materials, automotive and aerospace systems, conventional and alternative energy systems, and robotics and controls.

Common First Year

All first-year students complete a common first year. Courses include: Applied Mathematics — Calculus, Applied Mathematics — Linear Algebra, Business for Engineers, Chemistry, Computer Programming Fundamentals, Introductory Engineering Design and Innovation Studio, Physics, Properties of Materials and Statics. Upon completing Western Engineering’s common first year, students apply to the Mechanical Engineering program.

Upper Years

Our second and third-year courses are designed to provide a strong knowledge base in the core areas of mechanical engineering. In fourth year, students specialize in an area of study by taking five advanced technical electives from the list provided on the back of this document. Students can use these courses to specialize in computer-aided design, energy conversion, automation and robotics, thermal and fluid engineering, biomechanical engineering, and more. Fourth-year students also complete a major Mechanical Engineering Design Project, working closely with faculty members and industry partners. This capstone course is an opportunity for students to address real-world design problems using the concepts and practices they have learned.

Applicants must complete the full International Baccalaureate Diploma including each of the following to be considered for admission: Completion of the entire Diploma including the Theory of Knowledge and Extended Essay; Passes in a minimum of 6 subjects of which 3 must be at the Higher Level; A minimum grade total of 28 including points awarded for the Extended Essay and Theory of Knowledge; No mark less than 4 on any individual course; Prerequisites for your program as specified by Western. Other English Language Requirements accepted: Minimum score required on the TOEFL is 550 on the paper based with a 5 on the TWE, and 83 on the internet-based tests with no score below 20; Pearson Test of English Academic: A minimum overall score of 58 is required with no score less than 56; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): A minimum overall score of 80 is required with no score less than 78; International English Language Testing Service (IELTS): a minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no part less than 6.0; CanTEST: A minimum overall score of 4.0 is required with no part less than 4.0; CAEL: A minimum overall score of 60 is required with no part less than 60.
