Learn to collect, analyse and interpret data. Statistics is a mathematical tool to help us understand today's information-rich world and statisticians work in many different industries - from the financial world to marketing campaigns to government policy.

At Victoria University of Wellington you'll study both theory and practice and get the knowledge and skills you need to use statistics in the workplace. You're likely to focus on one of three different pathways - Mathematical Statistics, Applied Statistics, or Data Science.

Course Structure

For this degree you'll need to:

Complete at least 360 points, of which:

• At least 270 points must be from courses listed for the BSc
• At least 210 points must be from 200 and 300-level courses, including:
• At least 150 points must be from courses listed for the BSc
• At least 75 points must be from 300-level courses listed for the BSc

Courses listed for other degrees may be counted as being BSc courses, including:

• A maximum of 30 points if taken to satisfy a BSc major
• A maximum of 60 points if taken to satisfy a second major from another first degree at this university
• A maximum of 60 points across both these categories
• Complete one course in MATH 100-399, PHYS 100-399, QUAN 100-399, STAT 100-399, ENGR 121-123 or Engineering Physics for Electronics and Computer Systems (ENGR 142)
• Complete one approved course that demonstrates competency in oral and written communications

In addition to the degree requirements, for this major you'll need to complete:

Two courses at 100 level:

Either Probability and Decision Modelling (MATH 177) or Statistics in Practice (STAT 193)

One further course from:

• MATH 100-199
• STAT 100-199

Four courses at 200 level:

• Either Multivariable Calculus (MATH 243) and Mathematical Statistics (MATH 277)

• Or Applied Statistics 2A (STAT 292) and Applied Statistics 2B (STAT 293)

  30 further 200-level points from the Science schedule or other approved courses

Four courses at 300 level:

Either Statistical Inference (STAT 332) or Linear Models (STAT 393)

One course from STAT 300–399

Two further courses from:

• Statistics for Data Science (DATA 303), Simulation and Stochastic Models (DATA 304)
• OPRE 300-399
• STAT 300-399
