The Victoria University of Wellington Bachelor of Arts (BA) will give you insights into cultures, languages, art, history, politics and societies that will challenge your thinking and expand your view of the world.

Chinese

Study Mandarin, the main language in China (including Taiwan), Singapore and in Chinese communities all over the world. Learn to speak the language and to use the ideographic, or symbolic, writing system while gaining insights into Chinese society and culture.

Course structure

For this degree you'll need to:

Complete at least 360 points, of which:

• At least 240 points must be from courses listed for the BA
• At least 80 points must be from 100-level courses listed for the BA
• A maximum of 180 points can be at 100 level and
• At least 180 points must be at 200 and 300 level
• at least 75 must be from 300-level courses listed for the BA
• Of the 75 points, up to 15 may come from courses listed for another degree when they are taken to satisfy the requirements of an additional major subject from another degree

In addition to the degree requirements, for this major you'll need to complete:

Three courses at 100 level:

• Chinese Language 1A (CHIN 101)
• Chinese Language 1B (CHIN 102)
• Introduction to Chinese Civilisation (CHIN 112)

Three courses at 200 level:

• Chinese Language 2A (CHIN 211)
• Chinese Language 2B (CHIN 212)
• One further course from CHIN 200-299

Three courses at 300 level:

• Chinese Language 3A (CHIN 311)
• Chinese Language 3B (CHIN 312)
• One further course from CHIN 300-399
