The Civil Engineering curriculum combines a broad-based education with focus on science (e.g. Math, Physics and Chemistry), engineering analysis (e.g. Environmental Engineering, Fluid and Soil Mechanics, Transportation, Structures, Sustainability, and Construction Management) and design (e.g. Concrete Structures, Steel Structures, Water and Wastewater Treatment Facilities, Pavement, and Foundations). Specializations include structural engineering, geotechnical and pavement engineering, environmental Engineering, water resources, and construction management. Most Civil and environmental engineers are involved with essential facilities and structures such as buildings, bridges, dams, highways, airports, as well as water, wastewater, and solid/hazardous waste treatment facilities.

Civil Engineering Major Undergraduate ABET Program Educational Objectives

Program graduates will have the skills to become successful civil engineering professionals and problem solvers;
Program graduates will actively engage in lifelong learning, pursue professional licensure, and be professionally active;
Program graduates will become leaders in shaping engineering and public policy; and
Program graduates will be prepared for the successful pursuit of advanced degrees.

Prospective students who have not earned college credits since graduating from high school with a diploma or GED should consult this section for information on admission to the University of Pittsburgh. For the Pittsburgh campus, a 100 or higher TOEFL composite score with sub scores of 21 or higher is considered competitive, or a 7.0 IELTS with sub scores of 6.0 or higher.
