Our Bachelor of Therapeutic Recreation will prepare graduates to become certified therapeutic recreation specialists (CTRS). The program is the first of its kind in Alberta and one of only eight degree programs leading to therapeutic recreation certification in Canada.

Therapeutic recreation uses functional intervention, education and recreation to help those with cognitive, physical, emotional and social limitations gain independence and reduce barriers to wellness and activity. It engages persons based upon their abilities in planned recreation and related experiences, promotes and educates persons in health and wellness, and reduces or eliminates activity limitations to achieve optimal health and well-being.

This career field is emerging as one of the most promising growth professions in health care.

Senior Secondary School Certificate of Graduation and an average grade of 72% or higher (where 60% is the passing grade). English Language Requirements: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) taken within the last two years, with minimum scores of: 550 on the paper-based TOEFL and 4.0 on the Test of Written English (TWE); or 80 on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT), with minimum scores of 16 in each of Listening, Reading, and Speaking, and a minimum score of 18 in Writing; Academic International English Languages Testing System (IELTS) test, taken within the last two years, with a minimum overall score of 6.0, and a minimum 6.0 in each band; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic score, taken within the last two years, with a minimum overall score of 54; Canadian Academic English Language (CAEL) Assessment, taken within the last two years, with a minimum overall score of 60, with a minimum 50 in each of Listening, Reading, and Speaking, and 60 in Writing; Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE), with a minimum score of ‘C’; Cambridge English: Proficiency (CPE), with a minimum score of at ‘C’; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), with a minimum overall score of 80, with a minimum 76 in each component, including the Speaking test.
