UTP: Product Design is the equivalent to the first year of your undergraduate Product Design degree. Upon completion of the programme, you will be eligible to progress to the second year of the Bachelor of Product Design degree at the University of Canterbury.

The University of Canterbury is leading the way with its multidisciplinary Bachelor of Product Design. Product Design combines creative design, science, engineering, and business studies. Product designers plan and develop items for use in homes, businesses, and industry.

Everyday products such as microwave ovens, bicycles, mobile phones, and automated espresso coffee machines both resolve a need or problem and inspires a craving within a consumer. By specialising in Industrial Product Design, you get to learn how to create useful products which incorporate fundamental elements found in successful modern-day designs: a scientific or engineering principle and an appealing aesthetic. Subjects

UTP Product Design is a set programme of study. Students will study seven courses from the following subject areas. Note: Not all subjects will be offered every semester and failure to pass a required course will result in a delay in the completion of studies.

Compulsory academic subjects for all majors:

• Product Design 1
• Mathematics
• Foundation of Engineering
• Fundamentals of Management

Additional courses for specific major

Industrial Product Design:

• Engineering Physics
• Materials Science for Design
• Principles of Marketing

All UTP students are required to complete compulsory study skills programmes (fee free).
