From 2021, we are making some exciting changes to our BCom: real-world case studies, applied skills and innovative workshops that mix disciplines will be an ever-greater focus, right from the start of your first year.

Programme structure

A BCom with a double major is a three-year degree programme. You will be required to complete a minimum of 24 courses (360 points). In your first year, you will complete a set of core Stage 1 courses and further courses depending on the major(s) you are planning to take.

A double major requires careful planning.

You will also be required to select two General Education papers – this is a distinctive feature of our University’s degree designed to broaden your education.

If you wish to major in Accounting you will need to enrol in ACCTG 102 in your first year.

If you wish to major in Economics you will need to enrol in ECON 152 in your first year.

If you wish to major in Finance you will need to enrol in ACCTG 102 and MATHS 108 (or 150 or 153) in your first year.

Taxation:

Gain an understanding of the New Zealand taxation system and its application in today’s business environment, including how taxation affects accounting practice.

Subject overview

Tax is a cost on business, and tax compliance is the most common area where business, government and the law come into contact. Accordingly, a basic understanding of tax is useful for all business and law students.

The Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) major includes courses that are essential prerequisites for those planning to join Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CA ANZ) or Certified Practising Accountants Australia (CPA Australia). You can study finance and property law, company law and/or commercial contracts, before undertaking courses that will provide you with an advanced understanding of taxation.

The Bachelor of Laws (LLB) includes an elective course in taxation, although this is an essential course for graduates who want to become a tax lawyer.
