From 2021, we are making some exciting changes to our BCom: real-world case studies, applied skills and innovative workshops that mix disciplines will be an ever-greater focus, right from the start of your first year.

Programme structure

A BCom with a double major is a three-year degree programme. You will be required to complete a minimum of 24 courses (360 points). In your first year, you will complete a set of core Stage 1 courses and further courses depending on the major(s) you are planning to take.

A double major requires careful planning.

You will also be required to select two General Education papers – this is a distinctive feature of our University’s degree designed to broaden your education.

If you wish to major in Accounting you will need to enrol in ACCTG 102 in your first year.

If you wish to major in Economics you will need to enrol in ECON 152 in your first year.

If you wish to major in Finance you will need to enrol in ACCTG 102 and MATHS 108 (or 150 or 153) in your first year.

Finance:

Finance can be broadly defined as the science of money management. It plays a crucial role in the health of an economy and every business enterprise within it.

Subject overview

Study Finance with us and you will be well prepared for a career in banking, investment management or corporate finance. Because Finance and Accounting are complementary, we strongly recommend you take these subjects as a double major in your Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) degree. This will give you a broader base of skills and knowledge, and enhance your flexibility in terms of prospective career options. However, you can also study Finance as a double major alongside one of the other majors offered with the BCom. Along with a thorough grounding in your subjects, you will learn to be creative and critical in your thinking, and to apply your learning in contexts outside the classroom.
