Programme overview

After graduating with a BA, you can complete a one-year Bachelor of Arts (Honours) as a qualification in its own right. Alternatively, it can be a pathway to a further year of study in a Master of Arts programme.

The BA(Hons) is an opportunity to extend your understanding of an academic area that you already find intellectually rewarding and personally meaningful. There's also the option of pursuing a subject that's different from your undergraduate major so long as you have the required background.

During your honours year, you can deepen your knowledge in small classes with some of New Zealand’s leading scholars. It's a great opportunity to hone skills that will be an advantage in any career.

Semester Two admission may not be available for some subjects.

Logic and Computation:

Logic and Computation is designed to give you a sound practical knowledge, conceptual and analytical skills and a deeper theoretical understanding of the field.

Subject overview

Did you know that the way a computer works is closely related to the laws of thought and the structure of language? This fascinating subject looks at the laws and methods of reasoning with symbolic representations. It includes human languages as well as digital information systems.

Studying Logic and Computation can help you develop conceptual and analytical skills and a deeper theoretical understanding. You’ll examine the structure, design and limitations of symbolic representations and procedures in both human thought and computer software.

If you have a flexible mind that’s capable of both creative, speculative thought and precise calculation, problem solving and design, then Logic and Computation is a great subject for you to study. It’s a combination of courses from Computer Science, Linguistics, Mathematics and Philosophy.

Logic and Computation is taught by experts in both the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Arts. We are the only university in New Zealand to offer an undergraduate programme of this kind.

Programme structure

120 points
Advanced taught courses (75 or 90 points)
A small research project such as a dissertation (usually 30 or 45 points)
You may be able to include up to 30 points from other subjects
One year full-time

Admission to the programme normally requires a completed bachelor degree from New Zealand, or an acceptable equivalent qualification from a recognised university (or similar) overseas in a related subject area, with the required GPE. English language requirements: IELTS (Academic): Overall score of 6.5 and no bands below 6.0; Internet-based TOEFL (iBT): Overall score of 90 and written score of 21; Paper-based TOEFL: Overall score of 575 and an Essay (TWE) of 4.5; C1 Advanced (CAE) or C2 Proficiency (CPE): Overall score of 176 and no bands below 169; Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic: Overall score of 58 and no PTE Communicative score below 50; Foundation Certificate in English for Academic Purposes (FCertEAP): Grade of B-; Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB): 85.
