Accounting prepares you for a career across borders. Acknowledged as ‘the language of business’, accounting is spoken by all organisations – big and small – all government agencies and departments, and all not-for-profit institutions around the globe. A major in Accounting will offer you a variety of career paths in the private and public sector, public accounting firms, small business and self-employment.

Accounting is essential for monitoring and guiding business operations to enable managers to gain an accurate and up-to-date picture of the financial health of their organisations.

Our Accounting major focuses on the preparation, interpretation and communication of accounting information that is essential for effective decision-making within an organisation. You can choose to undertake focused study in financial or management accounting, or complete a more generalised program of study covering a range of accounting subjects in greater depth.

Our course is fully accredited by the three professional accounting bodies (Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, CPA Australia and the Institute of Public Accountants). As a result, our graduates are highly sought-after by employers.

Career Pathways

The Accounting major offers a variety of career paths in the private and public sector, public accounting firms, small business and self-employment. Professional accountants are employed as company directors, board members, chief executive officers and partners in business.

Further Study

After completing the Accounting major, you can pursue further studies at honours level or undertake a master’s degree such as the Master of Commerce or (after appropriate work experience) the Master of Business Administration.

Students are required to complete international academic qualification equivalent to Australian High School (or equivalent). Cambridge English: Advanced (CAE) - Minimum grade of 180 with no band less than 170; Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - Minimum grade of 180 with no band less than 170; GCE A-level - Minimum grade E in English Language, English Literature or English Language and Literature. IELTS - Minimum overall score of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0 (must include Academic Reading and Writing modules); PTE - An overall score of 64 with a minimum score of 59 in the speaking and writing sections, and no less than 54 in the listening and reading sections. TOEFL - Internet-based Test (iBT): An overall score of 82 with a minimum score of: 22 in the Writing section; 18 in the Reading section; 20 in the Speaking section; and 20 in the Listening section.
