專業(yè)概況

Financial Technology (FinTech) is an emerging engineering discipline that focuses on employing technological innovations in financial practices. Leveraging on the cutting-edge developments of engineering, particularly information technology and data sciences, it demonstrates an unprecedented potential to revolutionize the nature of the traditional financial service industry in a fundamental way. The advents of digital currencies, crowdfunding platforms, robot investment advisors, big data analytics, and algorithm-driven trading strategies profoundly impact the ways people make payments online and offline, store and manage their wealth, and finance their businesses. On one hand, FinTech significantly improves end-users service experience, making the financial industry more inclusive and productive.

This programme features a strong collaboration between Faculty of Engineering and the Faculties of Business Administration, Law, and Social Science. This multi-disciplinary training will equip students with both in-depth mastery of cutting-edge technical skills and a broad perspective on their applications and potential legal, economic, and societal impacts. The programme will closely collaborate with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) and the Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute (ASTRI) to organise internships and overseas exchanges for students, encouraging them to apply theory to practice.

Programme graduates will be ideally suited for positions that require strong quantitative and technological skills in the financial services industry. Prospective career opportunities include investment and commercial banking, insurance, asset management, Internet finance, government regulatory agencies, FinTech startups, and so on. They can also pursue further advanced studies in finance, management sciences and engineering, computer sciences, information engineering and related fields.

Programme Learning Outcomes

Through the course of their studies, FTEC students will have developed:
1. The ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering appropriate to the degree discipline (K/S)
2. The ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data (K/S)
3. The ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints, such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability and sustainability (K/S)
4. The ability to function in multi-disciplinary teams (S/V)
5. The ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems (K/S
6. The understanding of professional and ethical responsibility (V)
7. The ability to communicate effectively (S)
8. The ability to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context, especially the importance of health, safety and environmental considerations to both workers and the general public (V)
9. The ability to recognize the need for, and to engage in life-long learning (V)
10. The ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice appropriate to the degree discipline (K/S)
11. The ability to use the computer/IT tools relevant to the discipline along with an understanding of their processes and limitations (K/S/V)
12. The ability to apply the skills relevant to the discipline of financial technology in financial innovations, especially in the areas of payment systems, investment decisions and financial product developments, financial big data analytics, internet finance, and cyber and data security (K/S)

For applicants who have completed only the first year of IB Diploma studies with outstanding results, may be considered admission under special circumstances on individual merits case-by-case. Mature applicants should be aged 23 or above on 1 September in the year in which admission is sought, provided they are able to show either by publication or by other acceptable evidence that they have achieved sufficient competence in their chosen field of study to justify admission; or have shown exceptional ability in appropriate academic or professional fields. English Language Requirements: IELTS: 6.0; TOEFL (iBT): 80; SAT Reasoning Test (Old): Essay - 8; SAT (New) Evidence-Based Reading and Writing: 590; ACT combined English/ Writing or English Language Arts (ELA): 23; GCSE/ IGCSE/ GCE-OL: C; GCE-AL/AS: E; IB: 4; HKDSE: Level 3; HKALE/ HKCEE: E/Level 2; Australian State or Territory High School Certificate Grade 12 English: 80%; Canadian Grade 12 English: 70%; Indian Central or State Board Exam Grade 12 English: 80%; Malaysian UEC-Senior English Language: B4; Singapore GCE A-Level H1 General Paper: C.
