Overview

Biomedical scientists work at the cutting edge of research and medicine, helping to solve some of the most threatening diseases and conditions facing mankind.

St George’s has enjoyed an outstanding track record of research and innovation in infectious disease ever since the ‘father of vaccinology’ Edward Jenner, based here, created the world’s first vaccine (against smallpox). More recently, our research has included a focus on tuberculosis, malaria, HIV in low and middle-income countries and Covid-19.

We offer four pathways in Biomedical Science – in Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), Infection and Immunity, Molecular Mechanisms of Cancer, and Reproduction and Development. Originally established in 2007, they have been growing in strength and reputation ever since, and provide excellent preparation for either a PhD and research within an academic or industrial setting, or a career in the biomedical and medical sector.

This specialist pathway – one of few of its kind in the UK – focuses on the science behind reproduction, embryo formation and fetal development. Studying the interplay between genes and physiology during these processes and the complications that can arise, your research will seek solutions to improve fertility, and identify, treat or manage birth defects.

If you want to pursue a career in biomedical research - whether in academia, industry or government - this course will open up a world of opportunities. Many St George’s graduates have gone on to work in a variety of exciting and fulfilling careers in the biotech industry.

This course is highly effective in accelerating your development within your general healthcare career. The depth and quality of the academic research that you will undertake on your nine month project will also put you in a good position to apply for a PhD.

Students need to have a Bachelors Degree. English language requirement: IELTS: Group One:? Overall score of 7.0 (with at least 7.0 in writing and 6.5 in other three components); Group Two:? Overall score of 6.5 (with at least 6.5 in writing and 6.0 in other three components), Group Three: Overall score of 7.5 (with at least 7.5 in writing and 7.0 in other three components). TOEFL (Internet based): Group One:? Overall score of 93 (with at least 27 in writing, 20 in listening and speaking and 19 in reading); Group Two:? Overall score of 79 (with at least 24 in writing, 14 in listening and reading and 18 in speaking); Group Three: Overall score of 102 (with at least 28 in writing, 22 in listening and speaking and 20 in reading).
