Whether you want to be behind a microphone or in front of a camera, we provide the theoretical and practical hands-on experiences that will allow you to pursue your interests. Internships in media careers nationwide will complement your study in specializations in digital media arts and animation, electronic journalism, media industries, radio/audio production, electronic sports media, and television/video production. Graduates of the Department of Radio, Television, and Digital Media are leaders who set the tone for media across the numerous platforms.

Students in the Department of Radio, Television, and Digital Media combine the historical and critical knowledge with hands-on practice to become cutting edge media producers and scholars. Our world-class production and research faculty guide students not only in the use of the latest technologies, but also in developing an understanding of the social, political and economic contexts of the media they produce and analyze.

SPORTS PRODUCTION

Students learn the fundamentals of live-event video production and receive practical experience in a variety of production positions on live ESPN 3 telecasts.

RTD 321: Sports, Media and Society

RTD 365B: Multi-Camera Production

RTD 379: Sports Venue Production

RTD 479: Multi-Camera Field Production

PLUS: 12 HOURS OF RTD ELECTIVES

SPORTS JOURNALISM

Students learn the basic techniques of covering and reporting on sporting events, including interviews and live game coverage. They also explore legal, ethical and cultural issues surrounding sports.

Required courses for Electronic Journalism track:

RTD 310: News Writing for Electronic Media

RTD 312: Electronic Sports Journalism (preq 310)

RTD 370: Television News Reporting (preq 310)

RTD 470: Television News Field Production (preq. 370)

PLUS: 6 HOURS OF RTD ELECTIVES

Students must have completed a high school or equivalent. Academic Requirements (grade point averages are on a 4.0 scale and are calculated by SIU): 26 credits or more at another college/university - submit college/university transcripts showing a GPA of 2.0 or greater on all coursework; 0-25 credits at another college/university - submit high school AND university/college transcripts showing 2.0 GPA on all coursework; 5 Passes on the GCE O or A level exams (under the Cambridge/ed excel model). English Language Requirement: TOEFL - 68 on the internet-based test; TOEFL - 520 on the paper-based test; ITEP - 4.0 (academic plus only); IELTS - 6.0.
