History teaches you to understand past cultures and societies, and to be an engaged citizen. You’ll learn persuasive writing and critical thinking to evaluate problems and questions from multiple perspectives.

Majoring in history at OSU will teach you to understand past cultures and societies and to be an engaged citizen. Our established public history program features strengths in historic preservation, museum studies and digital history. Our “Jobs in History” practicum course gives hands-on experience and real-world connections, in art museums, oral history programs, historical archives and others.

Career paths

A History education cultivates key analytical and writing skills that are valuable in virtually and profession. Our graduates enjoy successful careers in a variety of fields: M.A. and Ph.D. programs; Law School; Business; Government; K-12 Teaching; Journalism; Museum Professionals; Historical Preservation; Non-Profit Agencies and Foundations; Legislative Bodies; Library Sciences.

Real-world skills

A history degree offers skills in written/oral communication, global knowledge, critical thinking, and civic engagement. History majors get focused, individualized attention from the undergraduate advisor, with special resources to keep track of their degree programs.

There are numerous courses available in American, Ancient, East Asian, Latin American, Modern European, Medieval, and Middle Eastern History and give students an opportunity to learn more about other cultures and further develop their research and writing skills.
