The course draws on Monash's world-leading expertise in medical practice and research, which includes treating premature babies at risk of brain disease, replacing heart valves without open-heart surgery and developing new cancer drugs. It also draws on the Jeffrey Cheah School of Medicine and Health Sciences' particular strengths in the cardio-metabolic field, infection and immunity, global public health and neuroscience.

Our JCSMHS researchers have discovered new genes and hormones that show promise as targeting proteins for cancer research. They have also patented discoveries likely to lead to new products for treating infectious and cardiovascular diseases.

The JCSMHS is also home to the renowned Brain Research Institute at Monash Sunway, now collaborating with the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO) to provide a platform for neuroscientists in the region through seminars and training programs.

Career outcomes

The career of a doctor involves further training beyond the medical degree. In Malaysia, on completion of the medical course, students need to apply to the Ministry of Health Malaysia to undertake their houseman ship in a public hospital. After completing their houseman ship, they must complete three years of compulsory service in hospitals and clinics under the Ministry of Health Malaysia. To be conferred with a specialist degree in surgery, obstetrics, pediatrics, psychiatry or other area, you must undertake further study to obtain a Master of Medicine.

Approved and Recognised

The Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (BMedSc/MD) program has been approved and recognised by the Medical Council of India.

Students enrolling from 2019 will be awarded the BMedSc/MD degree to reflect an upgraded Masters level program. The MD program at Monash Malaysia is equivalent to the Australian direct entry program at the Clayton Campus in Australia. It is a five year undergraduate entry program with the two preclinical years in the Sunway Campus and the remaining three clinical years in Johor Bahru, in a hospital setting. In the final year, students enrolled in the Malaysian campus will spend 12 weeks in hospitals and clinics in metropolitan Melbourne.

The medical program in Malaysia has the same entry and exit criteria, same semester start and end dates and same learning objectives as the Australian program. At course completion, students graduate with the same Monash test amur.
