Our three-year law degree (JD) focuses on three mandates:

• Aboriginal and Indigenous Law
• Natural Resources and Environmental Law
• Sole/Small Town Practice with the Integrated Practice Curriculum (IPC)

We blend the study of legal doctrine with the hands-on learning of practical skills. Unlike other law schools, our law graduates are exempted from the articling requirement as a result of the integrated practical skills in all three years of our legal program. Law graduates may immediately sit for the bar exams and enter the legal profession practice ready.

The Bora Laskin Faculty of Law was a collaborative effort in Thunder Bay to serve the northern Ontario region and providing access to justice in our region.

We are a small community law school with class sizes that allow students and faculty members to get to know each other.

Program Objectives

The Faculty of Law at Lakehead University is committed to providing the highest quality legal education to its students and to preparing graduates for the practice of law in any setting, with an emphasis on practice in smaller centers and rural regions of Northern Ontario and Canada.

Lakehead offers an Integrated Practice Curriculum (IPC), the first in Canada to integrate legal professional training into a law degree. Students will complete one term non-paid placement in third year. Such placement, combined with the compulsory courses, qualify students to write the Ontario Bar examinations, without having to article with a law firm.

Curriculum

The Juris Doctor (JD) degree is a three-year second-entry, undergraduate program of study. A total of 18 FCE are required for graduation (6 FCE for each of three years), consisting of 11.5 FCE of compulsory courses, 3.5 FCE of electives, and a one semester placement (3 FCE). While elective courses are normally chosen from within the Faculty of Law; however, up to one FCE of the electives courses may be chosen from outside the Faculty of Law, with permission of the Dean of the Faculty of Law.
