Fontbonne’s professional writing program, the only one of its kind in the St. Louis area, blends the theoretical study of effective written communication with the practical application of writing skills in a variety of formats and contexts. You’ll develop a well-rounded understanding of professional-quality creative, technical, and academic texts and learn the production skills needed to create compelling, persuasive work. This program equips you with the knowledge and skills necessary to excel in any number of careers that require excellent written communication as well as in your personal and civic life.

At Fontbonne, your passion for writing gets an unparalleled boost, preparing you for success as a writer or in a multitude of professions that require excellent communication skills.

  • There are no other writing majors in this market—this one is unique.
  • Opportunity to participate in the digital platform Griffin Roar, giving you real-world experience and exposure.
  • Provides the foundation to pursue several options for emphasis in communication, journalism, creative writing, publishing and editing, or professional writing.
  • Exposure to a variety of writing formats and a range of writing classes, and the faculty to help you develop your unique voice and style.
  • In-depth study of the theory of writing, grounded in solid writing skills and techniques.
  • Select writing courses specific to your interests, including both professional and creative writing options.
  • Work closely with faculty in small classes.
  • Become a part of Fontbonne’s community of writers — a supportive group of people who are writing together or separately — and gain confidence while receiving valuable critical feedback.
  • Become a member of Sigma Tau Delta, Fontbonne’s chapter of the national English honor society.

All undergraduate programs require a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale from high school (equivalent to a 78% on a 100% scale).?Other English Language Requirements:?ELS: Completion of Level 112; Inlingua: Completion of ESL 300, 301, 302; Kaplan – Completion of Higher Intermediate level; Completion of English composition one at a US college or university; OR: COMPASS ESL Language Score 260+ (this option is only available for students in St. Louis who have applied to the university. The complimentary institutional test may only be taken one time for admission purposes).
