Overview

This course is designed for students who are interested in a career in the construction industry and require a foundation degree to enhance employment prospects and/or to progress to higher academic study. This course focuses on the principles and technical aspects of building design and construction and includes a work placement module in the second year of the course. A wide range of careers could be available upon successful completion, including work in Construction Management, Site Engineering, Land, Building and Quantity Surveying disciplines.

Career Prospects

Depending on successful completion and grade achieved, progression is by articulation to the second year of Ulster University’s BSc Hons Construction Engineering and Management or BSc Hons in Building Surveying with a further two years of study required. Alternatively you can undertake further study for a degree in another construction-related discipline or progress to employment within the construction industry.

Careers in Construction Engineering

Facilities Management – ensure that the facility is operating on a daily basis by completing daily inspections and conducting proactive and reactive maintenance. Duties include sourcing and overseeing contracts with service providers. Supervising teams of staff, managing budgets, overseeing renovation and building projects.

Building Surveyor – conduct physical site surveys using a variety of equipment and tools, prepare sketches and notes and perform electronic data collection. Coordinate field staff and process field data. Interface with civil engineers, landscape architects, cartographers or urban planners.
