Course Overview

This course has been designed specifically for mature students who have been out of full-time education for at least one year or do not have the relevant qualifications for entry to higher education.

You will attend college three to four days a week between 9.30 and 3.30.

You will be assigned a personal tutor who will support you with your UCAS application and personal development.

The curriculum is structured so that core study skills units are delivered together with the cohorts of the other Access courses in the College. The specialist science units are delivered as individual groups by our Science tutors. There are weekly tutorials where one to ones take place and you set own targets for development of specific skills and knowledge, including completion of the UCAS process. Your learning is further supported by Google Classrooms where all resources and assignments are uploaded for you to use.

Course Content

As well as the core study skills units, this course has been designed to offer 21 credits in Biology and 18 credits in Chemistry so that the learner has a good foundation in both subject areas enabling applications to a wide range of biology/chemistry related degrees.

• Inheritance, Evolution and Ecology
• Organic Chemistry
• Carbon Chemistry
• Anatomy & Physiology
• The Nervous System
• Pathogens and Disease
• Applied Science
• Exploring Science
• Maths for Science Number and Algebra.

Assessment

This course is assessed in a variety of ways with assignments including: presentations, discussions, tests, projects, practical work, problem solving exercises, essays, scientific reports, diagrams and interviews.

This course is designed to get you to University and is worth between 48 and 144 UCAS points (for September entry), depending on the grade you achieve.
